View a species

Once you've found a species that interests you, you can view the species information and data.

  1. Firstly click on the species name in the name column of the species browser results table [B].
  2. You will now arrive at the selected species's metadata page. On this page you can examine all the maps, metadata ("information about the species") and statistics related to your selected species.
  3. There are a number of distinct sections on the species page. A brief outline of the functions of each is outlined below.

Species Detail

The species detail section shows the top level metadata on file for the selected species. Some examples of the information which can be viewed are as follows.

  1. Taxonomic data such as species group, scientific name, common name and synonyms.
  2. Spatial data including the number of 50km, 10km and 100m grid squares in which the species has been recorded.
  3. Temporal data including the oldest/newest records on file for the selected species.
  4. Phenology data which is different to regular temporal data in that it refers to the earliest/latest record on file for a selected species in any one year.
  5. Species profiles are available for many species at the National Biodiversity Data Centre's Species Profiles system. Links are also provided for species profiles from EOL(Encyclopaedia of Life) and WikiSpecies.

If the species metadata page is accessed from within a dataset, the figures shown in the species detail section will be based only on the selected dataset. Otherwise the figures are calculated across all datasets. This is clearly outlined in the title of the species detail section.

Mapping

  1. 10km2 and 50km2 distribution maps are shown for the selected species.
    • Click Download to download the distribution map in multiple formats or for instructions on how to embed the map in your own website.
    • Click Live map to map navigate to the live mapping page preloaded with the selected species.

Charts

The statistics section shows various charts relating to the selected species.

  1. The Records per month chart shows a breakdown of the number of records per month for the selected species.
  2. The Records per year chart shows a breakdown of the number of records per year for the selected species.

Regardless of how the species page is accessed i.e. via a dataset or directly, the Records per month / Records per year charts on the species page are always calculated across all datasets. This is clearly outlined in the title of the charts.
